A nonprofit serving Colorado seeks an experienced Controller to lead day-to-day financial operations and ensure strong fiscal stewardship across the organization!

THE OPPORTUNITY

Our confidential client’s Controller serves a vital role at this Colorado non-profit in all financial aspects of the organization. We are seeking a person that enjoys the day-to-day accounting and grant management work that makes a difference and supports our business model approach in support of our purpose-driven non-profit work.

This position is responsible for all key organizational fiscal analysis, operations, budgeting, audit, payroll, and the fiscal management of State and Federal grant management.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

This role is responsible for budgeting, day-to-day accounting, grant compliance, audits, and financial reporting for a dynamic organization managing multiple state and federal grants.   • Manage day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll processing, and monthly close for five business units using QuickBooks
  • Prepare and present monthly financial statements and budget-to-actual reports to the Executive Director and Board Finance Committee
  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with staff across all units, and monitor cash flow, grant spend-down, and restricted fund usage
  • Maintain internal financial controls, employee payroll and PTO records, and ensure compliance with nonprofit financial standards
  • Oversee all fiscal aspects of state and federal grants, including reimbursement requests, budget revisions, and sub-recipient fund distributions
  • Serve as primary fiscal liaison to sub-recipients, providing training, technical assistance, and guidance on allowable costs, match requirements, and grant compliance
  • Draft and manage sub-recipient contracts and Memos of Agreement, ensuring financial terms align with grant regulations and organizational policy
  • Lead the annual audit and Single Audit processes, coordinating documentation, managing timelines, and responding to auditor inquiries
  • Ensure timely submission and accuracy of all required federal and state filings (e.g., 1099s, 990 review), and manage financial reporting for the annual report

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with the financial management of an organization.
  • Experience managing the financial functions of state and federal grants
  • Experience with audits of state and federal grant funds.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with QuickBooks’ use of Class, Customer, Job, and Sub-Job for tracking organization level, unit level, funding source, and grant revenues and expenses.
  • Fluency in budgeting, cost control principles, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Trainer-level comfort with federal and state grant regulations and CFR requirements.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare reports, statements, and projections for a nonspecialist audience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2+ years’ experience leading the financial management of an organization.
  • 2+ years’ experience managing the financial functions of state and federal grants
  • 2+ years’ experience with audits of state and federal grant funds.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with grant management for Colorado State and Federal grant programs.
  • Experience supporting small and/or rural community groups in navigating grants management, fiscal oversight, and federal regulations.

WHAT OUR ORGANIZATION IS PROVIDING

  • Hiring salary range of $75,000 - $110,000 based on background, skills and experience.
